Hervey Bay/Fraser Island scenes

The city of Hervey Bay is a comfortable three and a half hour drive, or 45 minute flight, north of Brisbane, Queensland's capital city. Recognised as the Whale Watch Capital of the World, Hervey Bay is home to humpback whales from July to early November.

Millions of overnight visitors come to this region each year, including many thousands of international visitors. A million day trippers visit Hervey Bay annually. Visiting Fraser Island begins in picturesque Hervey Bay with vehicular and passenger ferries providing access to the island across the Great Sandy Strait.

Fraser Island stretches over 123 kilometres in length and 22 kilometres at its widest point. With an area of 184,000 hectares it is the largest sand island in the world.

Fraser Island was officially renamed K'gari by the World Heritage Committee in 2021 out of respect for the Butchella People.
